Enjoy Your New Living Space
At Professional Home Improvement, our West Michigan home remodeling team works efficiently to ensure you can enjoy your new living space as soon as possible. However, we cannot deny the disruption home remodeling projects can have on your life. Living in a hotel room until the project is over is not always feasible for our clients, but it is recommended for large remodeling projects.
For your convenience, we have created a list of tips to help you continue your everyday activities, despite our presence in your home.
Establish Some Ground Rules
At the beginning of any house remodeling project, it is important to ensure you are on the same page as the remodeling team working on your house. One of the most important things to establish right away is good working hours. For example, if you would like some peace from the remodeling chaos on a certain day or timeframe, make sure to let the project supervisor know. Once the remodeling project is underway, you will not be able to carve out time spent on the project as easily.
Section Off Livable Areas
Home remodeling can be messy, stirring up air-borne particles from sawdust, drywall, and installation. This dust can settle in inconvenient places such as in your air ducts or other surfaces in your home’s interior. To remedy this, we recommend that you cover your air duct vents with plastic and (if possible) turn off any circulation systems in your home, such as heating and air conditioning units. We suggest sectioning off livable areas in your home with plastic sheets and painter’s tape.
Protect Your Possessions
During the remodeling process, you will want to take some of your more valuable and/or fragile items out of the line of fire. For example, pictures hanging on your walls should be removed and stored safely. Other household items such as furniture and electronic devices should be covered with plastic or moved elsewhere.
Create a Multi-Purpose Room
Having a multi-purpose space set aside in your home is a must-have for all those who wish to stay in their homes during the home remodeling process. If you are remodeling your kitchen, we recommend setting up a makeshift kitchen in another area of the house, such as a bedroom. Supplies you should have in your temporary kitchen include a refrigerator, microwave, can-opener, food items, and anything else you might require. Using disposable plates, cups, and utensils can be a smart move so that you don’t have to deal with the hassle of trying to clean and dry dishes somewhere else.
Leave the Home
Ultimately, trying to live with an ongoing remodeling project can be taxing on your mental strength. Try to make the best of your situation by taking the opportunity to try out a new restaurant or take that trip you’ve been putting off. Having a remodeling project in your home can be the perfect excuse to try something new.
